The baseball team lost both games against Northwest Nazarene in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament after defeating Saint Martin’s in a four-game series 3-1.

The championship series against Northwest Nazarene happened May 20 -21. The Wildcats lost to Northwest Nazarene 8-2 on May 20 and 9-6 on May 21.

Seniors JJ Asinas and Dillon Larsen reflected on what brought them to the tournament.

JJ Asinas said he was happy where they stood before the tournament, but believed they could have done better in the regular seasons.

“It was our goal to get where we are now, we could have done better in the regular season, but we are excited and very thrilled to be in the championship series,” Asinas said.

Asinas said the team needed to have energy and focus, and everything else should work out.

When asked what it will take to come out on top Asinas replied, “we play together and for each other, with those two things in mind we’re pretty hard to beat.”

Asinas’s biggest goal was to bring the championship trophy back to Ellensburg and get his teammates some championship rings.

“I just want to win a championship, that’s been the goal for 5 years now and to be in a position to do it in my second senior season is something special.”

Senior pitcher Dillon Larsen believed they had yet to play their best baseball and tried to do so this past weekend. Larsen hoped to limit mistakes and score a lot.

Dillon said the impact COVID-19 had on their season last year by cutting it short was very heartbreaking for them and it motivated them to want to win even more and play their hearts out.

“Our plan is to win two games and go home with some hardware, it’s that simple,” Dillon said.

Dillon’s personal goal this season was to play the best he possibly could and give his team a chance to win each game.
