Student Online & Social Media Editor

The online and social media editor has the primary responsibility for the Observer Online and its social networking sites, working closely with the section editors to ensure at least one fresh story each day, and overseeing any staffers assigned to the Online section, who are responsible for any breaking news and who are responsible for updating the Observer’s social networking sites.

Detailed Job Descriptions:

  • Develop a weekly content calendar through HootSuite of when content will be uploaded to the Online Edition and the social media sites.
  • Create and distributes the weekly newsletter through MailChimp.
  • Work with business manager regarding any ad or sponsorship placements.
  • Final editor for content and accompanying headlines and visual media that is first posted online, after it’s read by the reporter’s section editor and at least one copy editor, and after any visual media has been edited by one of the visual editors.
  • Help create/track down visuals for upcoming stories.
  • Check Observer g-mail daily, forwarding story ideas to appropriate editors.
  • Check Hype, Central Today, Daily Record, and CWU News for general campus news daily, forwarding story ideas to appropriate editors
  • Find events and create the weekly back page calendar by weekly deadline.

Student Graphic Designer

The graphic designer has the main responsibilities of laying out text and developing visuals for print layouts on the weekly basis. This job requires a fast turn around for design and flexibility for breaking news. One night a week, graphic designers will be responsible for attending a Zoom call to fix copy edits within InDesign.

  • Collaborate on layouts on a weekly production schedule
  • Work with Lead Designer and EIC to coordinate designs
  • Meet with photographers and reporters to discuss visual concepts
  • InDesign experience required
  • Photo editing and illustration preferred
  • Be available to tweak designs during copy editing sessions
  • Work on promotional materials upon request
