Golf Club has rough weekend

Chance Davis, golf club team member and officer, took his team to its first regional golf tournament of the fall quarter. The team traveled to Sunnyside, Wash. to compete against University of Oregon and the University of Idaho.

There are two regional tournaments, and the Wildcats must win at least one, both individually and as a team, to make it to nationals. During their first tournament this past weekend at the Black Rock Creek Golf Course, Central’s club finished last as a team.

“We are all phenomenal, but I don’t know what happened. Just not our weekend,” Davis said. “Nobody played really well all weekend.”

Each player on Central’s team shot an 80 or worse, out of a par of 72. On the first day of the two day tournament, it was fairly windy, presenting a few problems for Davis and the team.

Davis said one of his biggest mistakes was playing too aggressive on a long par 5, hitting into the wind. He ended up shooting a triple bogey on the hole, which made up of a quarter of his penalty strokes. Davis finished the day shooting a 87. Although he shot an 83 the next day, it wasn’t enough to win the tournament.

The University of Oregon won the entire tournament as a team. Each Oregon player shot an 85 or better, with the individual winner shooting one under par.

There is one more upcoming regional tournament in Oregon at the OGA golf course on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18. This will give the Wildcats another shot to make nationals as a team.

The team has never played on the OGA golf course before. Davis said they are hoping to get down there before the tournament to practice.

Since golf is not recognized as a varsity sport, the players pay to play in their tournaments. Players from universities across the country provide funding to the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA), who then puts in tournaments.
