Welcome back to Sound Bite! A lot happened this week, but this issue we are focusing on one event and one event only. That’s right, this week is Grammy coverage. From Beyonce to Doechii, this year’s grammys is what I could only describe as near perfect. So without any more delay, let’s jump right into it.
First I want to talk about Doechii winning “Best Rap Album” for “Alligator Bites Never Heal”. This is probably my personal biggest win of the night, and I can honestly say I was not expecting it to happen. From the day Doechii released this tape I have been listening to it on repeat, and it is truly the rap album of the year in my books. To see her winning against industry staples like Future and J. Cole not only sends a powerful message to other women in the rap scene, but proves that a new era of rap is coming, and I could not be more excited.
Beyonce also had a huge night at the grammys, winning both “Best Country Album” and “Album of the Year” with her hit country album “Cowboy Carter”. This is probably the single most divisive opinion I have with this year’s awards, but I am not afraid to say it. Beyonce deserved these awards, especially “Album of the Year”. I’ve seen so much hate online and so many people wondering why she deserved it. If I see someone hating on the album I’m going to assume they haven’t listened to it, because it is by far the most powerful album out of the nominees, and showcases a level of skill and mastery I havent seen from any other artists this past year.
Coming off that hot take I’d like to give another. “Short and Sweet” by Sabrina Carpenter did not deserve the “Best Pop Vocal Album” award. Having listened to and reviewed every album that was nominated I can easily say that almost any other choice would have been more deserving, but the real winner should’ve been Billie Eilish. That said, none of this is reflective of Sabrina’s vocal talent. I thought her performance was amazing, and I do think she is the future of the genre, I just think she has some room to grow and this album showcased that gap.
Lastly I would be remiss if I didn’t cover Kendrick Lamar, and his historic sweep with “Not Like Us” winning five separate awards. Ever since the beef, Kendrick Lamar has been on a historic victory lap and this award season is just further proving it. I have honestly never seen anything quite like this, and I am so happy to see Kendrick getting all the respect he has earned, and deserves. As he said on “GNX”, he does in fact “deserve it all.”
