Andrew Garfield’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ deserved to have a third movie come to life. Unlike Toby Maguire and Tom Holland’s movies, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ had only been a two-movie series instead of the classic trilogy that has been created for this Marvel superhero. Even Miles Morales’ Spider-Man is on its way to becoming a part of the three-movie trend like the others before it.
Originally the movie that had been released in 2012 with a sequel in 2014 that did not perform the best with little awards received and the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score. The first movie scored 71% and the second a 50%. As for his Spider-Man counterparts, their first movies performed much better, with McGuire’s receiving a 90% and Holland’s 92%. Garfield’s take on the web slinging hero didn’t perform well in the past, but recently it has made a resurgence with more people talking about Garfield’s performance and his movie deserving one last chance.
Garfield is able to naturally play the part of a nervous, heartbroken teen who is dealing with the loss of his uncle while getting a grip on his newfound powers. As Toby Maguire had been the blueprint and given the writers something to work off, the script for Garfield was far less awkward and cringy in comparison to McGuire’s Peter Parker.
In Holland’s movies, Aunt May is quite young in comparison to the aunt and uncle of Garfield’s movies. The older age adds to the audience’s emotional attachment. Especially during the scene of the first ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ wher
e Uncle Ben passes away looking out in the city for Peter after he ran off. Witnessing the loss of his uncle, Peter Parker replays the voicemail left by Ben and becomes consumed by the guilt of being the reason his uncle was out that night.
The cinematography for these two movie series was also something that the other movies are unable to beat. There is a scene in which Garfield is sitting on his own web in the sewers while looking for Dr. Curtis Connors which was shot very well. Another scene that was filmed incredibly when the kid wearing the Spider-Man mask was trapped in the vehicle falling off the bridge and Spider-Man saved him. Viewers couldn’t help but have their heartstrings tugged on with the way it reflected Spider-Man as a child losing his loved ones in a plane crash and needing to be brave.
Unfortunately, a script for the third movie had never been created. One of the writers from the second movie, Alex Kurtzman, spoke out on the failure of the second movie and the domino effect that occurred to stop a third one from being created. At the time, Garfield allegedly had been fired. Kurtzman did discuss one of the concepts that the screenwriters discussed had been a Mary Jane Watson being introduced to the story after the death of Gwen Stacy.
Garfield’s Spider-Man does still exist, As he had a cameo in Holland’s third movie, ‘Spider-man: No Way Home’ and is rumored to have an appearance in the fourth one. He has rejected any claims but fans are hopeful that he is lying after doing so with the third one.
Rewatch ‘The Amazing Spider-man’ and remind yourself how enjoyable Garfield’s performance is.
