This Week In Music
Welcome back to Sound Bite! This week we have a couple new albums to look over as well as an update on some news from the past! Halloween week is always a fun week for music because it means that artists are more likely to drop some seasonally inspired project, and what can be more fun than that?
Lil Uzi Vert released his latest project, “Eternal Atake 2,” this past week after a short but effective rollout. Sadly, I do not think this album comes even close to touching some of his past work. There are a couple fun songs on the project, but overall the quality is extremely inconsistent, and you can just tell there was not enough care put into all the different aspects of this project. I still have hope that Lil Uzi Vert can make a comeback at some point, but right now it’s not looking good.
Westside Gunn and DJ Drama just released a new album together as well. The project, entitled “Still Praying,” is an amazing production from Gunn and a true highlight of his discography. The songs are not all even, and it can take some grit to really sit through and absorb this whole project but once you do it is well worth it. From the underground production style using old funk and jazz classics, to the unique style of Gunn’s vocals everything about this project reeks of creativity and passion. And something I don’t often mention on Sound Bite– album covers. I love this album’s cover. It’s raw and it perfectly conveys exactly what you’ll be listening to before you even press play.
On a completely different note, The Cure just released their latest project after over a decade of stagnation and man does it rock. “Songs of a Lost World” is not just one of The Cure’s best projects, it’s really one of the best rock albums released at all recently. Their distinctive floaty style of rock combined with their years of age and experience produced one of the most concise and powerful pieces in recent rock history, and if you haven’t checked it out yet you are missing out.
Lastly – but certainly not least – is the new project “You Only Die 1nce” by Freddie Gibbs. The halloween inspired album is a fun listen through and through. I dont think it’s anything too special compared to Gibbs’ other work, but I wouldn’t sleep on it either. If you want something to wrap off the spooky season, or really just some consistent quality in an album then Gibbs is there for you. There aren’t any tracks that scream out to me on this project, and there aren’t any that I would skip, it’s just consistent quality throughout and for that I have to respect it.
