Halloween Havoc: Ellensburg and CWU prepare to excite for the spooky season.
October 28, 2021
For Ellensburg residents and CWU students, there are plenty of upcoming events to celebrate Halloween.
One of the events for Halloween weekend is a production of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at McConnell Hall on Friday, Oct. 29.
“I would just like to add how exciting it is for everyone involved to work on ‘Rocky,’” Nel Baehr, assistant director said. “After not being able to do it in 2020, the entire company is ready for Rocky to be back at CWU.”
Capacity will be limited in accordance with COVID-19 protocol. Proof of vaccination will be checked, with proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the performance being accepted as well. Doors will open at 9 p.m. and the show starts at 10 p.m.
“Rocky is an incredibly different kind of production though, so I imagine we’ll be surprising a lot of first timers and community members who came expecting a tame musical,” Baehr said.
Another event will be held, at the Ellensburg Foursquare Church, called Trunk or Treat. Trunk or Treat is a family event where visitors are encouraged to dress up, take pictures and bring bags to collect candy. Hosting a Trunk or Treat event is new for Foursquare Church, as this is the second year of Foursquare Church hosting the event.
“Last year was our first year putting on Trunk or Treat [in] response to the COVID-19 shutdowns,” Church Administrator Katelyn Switzer said. “All community events were canceled and there was much isolation. We wanted to provide a safe outside event and fun environment for families to gather, kids to use their imagination and everyone to be loved.”
Switzer said the foot traffic last year was high, and expects the same this year.
“We estimate last year serving 400 to 600 kids and families joined in on the fun, with this year being more of the same,” said Switzer.
The Foursquare Church Trunk or Treat event will be on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2-4 p.m.
Heading back to the campus, CWU will be hosting “Haunting at Central,” a three-hour event on Oct. 30, running from 9 p.m. to midnight. The event is free to CWU students and will take place in the SURC.
Robbi Goninan, Assistant Director of Campus Activities, said she was especially excited for the event to happen.
“The Haunting is an annual tradition for safe Halloween activities,” Goninan said. “We offer Zombie Zone provided by RHA & Recreation, Black Light Golf, Caricature Artist, Escape Rooms and snacks!”
CWU’s COVID-19 protocols remain in effect for the event.
“Currently, we are just asking for all participants to wear facial coverings,” Goninan said. “[The] typical turnout for Haunting is 900+ students, I believe the turnout will be the same or better this year. Students are excited to be back and making memories.”
To end the hallo-weekend, the 29th Annual “Boo Central” event takes place on Halloween day on the SURC lawn. The family event is expected to have “games, face-painting, interactive stations, candy prizes and giveaways with over 30 clubs and organizations,” according to the event information on CWU’s website.
“Our 29th Annual Boo Central is an event where clubs, orgs and departments set up activities for Kindergarten through fifth-grade students to trick or treat. Lots of candy to share,” Goninan said. “We’ve traditionally expected 600 families participating.”
Parents are encouraged to dress up with their children and join in on the fun. COVID-19 precautions will be in effect, with masks being required for admittance.
