What happened with the Flint water crisis?

The Flint Michigan water crisis has garnered attention by President Obama. On Thursday he announced the administration is giving $80 million to the city of Flint, Michigan according to Black Enterprise.

According to Time, Flint water was found to have eight times the amount of chloride than Detroit’s water, which is a highly corrosive chemical to metals.

The water often tasted and smelled off according to residents and was a brownish-yellow color.

Many Flint residents had old lead-service lines that connected their homes to the water source. After time, the chloride corroded the insides, which allowed lead to enter the water supply.

Officials at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, who were in charge of making sure the water was safe made a few decisions that impacted the quality of water.

According to fivethirtyeight.com, they did not require optimal corrosion control for the Flint water plant, despite telling the Environmental Protection Agency they did so in an email.

Additionally, they didn’t take a lot of samples and the ones they did take were from the wrong places that would not show high levels of lead. Two samples had high levels of lead but were thrown out. If they had kept the samples, the city would have had to alert residents of possible lead problems as early as summer of 2015, according to fivethirtyeight.com

Prior to using the river as the water source, Flint voted to join a new pipeline, which prompted Detroit to cancel the agreement, even though Flint could have signed a short-term lease with Detroit. The river was also a significantly cheaper alternative, according to fivethirtyeight.com.

In addition to President Obama, the state of Michigan is giving $28 million for bottled waters and filters as well as health, educational and nutritional services for children with lead in their systems, according to Black Enterprise.

Rapper, The Game, has also donated $500,000 of his own money to Flint, Michigan. He told the press that Avita Water will donate an additional $500,000, according to Vibe.
