The cast for the Beatles biopic was announced. In anticipation of this I thought I’d talk about the Beatles. More specifically, why Paul McCartney is the best of the four.
Paul McCartney is one of the members of the infamous boy band, the Beatles, joined by bandmates John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. On their own, these are some of the biggest names in music known across the world, so why is Paul McCartney the best? Let me walk you through it.
The Beatles revolutionized the Rock ‘n’ Roll genre that still heavily influences many bands and artists to this day. They completely changed the way “bands” were seen by the public. With four huge stars all playing together with no real “frontman,” the band was destined for greatness.
Despite the band having no real lead singer, McCartney stole the show with his creative song writing, defining singing voice and intricate bass riffs. While the early records of the Beatles are considered outdated (by me), McCartney’s songwriting skills still make hits like “Love Me Do” and “I Saw Her Standing There” remain relevant.
It wasn’t until the 1965 release of the album “Help” that pushed the band into what set them apart from any other band. On this album lives the song “Yesterday,” which as you might’ve guessed was written by McCartney. This is the first song in the Beatles discography that shows how they became the band we know today. “Yesterday” is the best written song to ever exist.
It was impressive for this band to make so many hits in such a brief time. The Beatles only released music from 1963 to 1970, a seven-year run with some of the most iconic albums ever made. To name a few: Sgt. Pepper’s, Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Road. All of which were made within two years of one another.
It was the album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” that really set McCartney’s skills above the rest of his bandmates. McCartney is credited with writing just about every song from this album from the two intro songs, “Fixing a Hole,” “Lovely Rita” and one of my personal favorites “When I’m Sixty Four.”
This was around the time McCartney knew he was better than his bandmates. He was an asshole and had every right to be one. McCartney took strong creative control for Sgt. Peppers and just about every album after which gave us hits like: “Blackbird,” “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” “Helter Skelter,” “Golden Slumbers” and “Let it Be.”
McCartney wrote and sang 71 total songs for the Beatles over the seven years they were together, but he didn’t stop there. Yes, McCartney could not be stopped after the collapse of the Beatles. He quickly started his solo career.
McCartney was so impatient to start his solo career that he recorded his debut album in secret from the Beatles, as they had not officially broken up yet. The album was released in 1970, the same year as the Beatles album “Let it Be” was released. The debut album was simply named “McCartney.”
A year later, McCartney and his wife Linda started a new group by the name of “Wings.” To me this is where McCartney really started to shine. It took about two years for the group to really find their footing, but when they did, they released the 1973 album “Band on the Run” which holds the hit song of the same name.
McCartney was a versatile musician, playing multiple instruments ranging from bass, guitar, and piano. His creativity has given a huge lasting impact on music from the 60s to the present, that’s just about six decades of not just music, but innovative music that pushed the boundaries of many genres. He is a beloved symbol in the world of music, and I am hoping Paul Mescal does him some justice in the upcoming movies.
I’ll stop blabbering about all the songs McCartney made now, but I do highly recommend giving at least Abbey Road a listen. If listening to the songs he wrote didn’t convince you that he is the best of the four Beatles members, then I’d say you didn’t listen to them.
Please do yourself a favor and dive into the history of the Beatles and Paul McCartney. I’m certain you’ll find at least one song that you enjoy, and it’ll most likely be written by Paul McCartney when you do.
