The ASCWU Student Government has brought the community together yet again through what better than a lip sync battle! On April 11, the Associated Students of CWU and the Equality and Services Council partnered up to bring energy and excitement to the stage, inviting all students to watch, meet and give their support to the ESC organizations. With a turnout of nearly 100 students, the SURC theater roared with applause for their ESC members.
Seven organizations associated with ASCWU and ESC got a chance to show off their dance moves, being the equality and services council exec team, First-generation Student Organization, Black Student Union, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicane de Aztlan, Filipino American Student Association, African Student Association and the President’s exec team.
Afterwards, a vote for the top performing group was held. The winning group was the First-Generation Student Organization (FGSO), for their performances of a remix on Renaissance by Beyonce, Bang Bang by Jessie J, and Marry you by Bruno Mars.
Treasurer for FGSO, Litzy, spoke on their performance, “In the past, FGSO hasn’t always participated in every ESC event, and we’re trying to make it a goal to not only plant our roots in the community, but at Central”, Litzy said. Not only were the organizations putting on a performance, but they were also putting themselves out there to all students, making themselves known and connecting with their community.
The ASCWU organization wanted to bring all branches of Equality and Services together and give the student lead organizations a chance to show their community what they have to offer and possibly get students to join. This came with its challenges however; as there was some shuffling around when it came to the planning of this event, kicking the ASCWU team into overdrive to set up this lip sync battle.
Director of Equity and Multicultural Affairs/ESC Chair, Javi Garcia Sanchez, elaborated on the planning for this event, “We did have a change in leadership at the last second … I think another small hardship has been communication too.”
With spring quarter just starting up, the ASCWU team had little time to put together an event that would draw in the student body. But, with the help of Salima Oulcaid, Community Programmer, they were able to overcome their challenges with the planning of this event, as she had filled in and made sure everything went smoothly. Garcia Sanchez and Oulcaid also took part in the lip sync battle, representing the ESC exec team; they performed Buttons by the Pussycat dolls.
Not only were these organizations able to connect with students, but they were also able to inform anyone who wanted to learn more about them. Although FGSO held the crown when all was said and done, what seemed to be a crowd favorite was FASA’s rendition of Give Me Everything by Pitbull. Committing to the bit, the FASA team even dressed in bald caps, goatees and glasses to resemble the artist. Even through hardship, the ASCWU team was able to pull through and create a loose and exciting environment which allowed students to connect with each other and the Equality and Services organizations.
