The GNAC has announced a delayed start for winter athletics, while also announcing a plan for some fall sports to move to the spring of 2021.

In a press release on Friday, Oct. 2, the GNAC announced the men’s basketball, women’s basketball and indoor track seasons will be delayed until at least Jan. 7.

This timeline will be continued to be reviewed over the next several months and could potentially be delayed or altered.

“The delay allows teams to better follow the guidelines set forth by local and state health authorities as well as evaluate the guidelines set forth in the NCAA’s Core Principles of the Resocialization of Collegiate Basketball,” the release says.

Several fall sports will also have their seasons rescheduled for the spring.

Fall sports including women’s soccer and volleyball would be tentatively rescheduled for the spring of 2021. The schedules for these sports are expected to be released in the next couple of weeks.

However, not every fall sport has or will be rescheduled. The previously canceled fall football season would not be rescheduled for the spring.

“Athletic directors requested institutional autonomy in developing the makeup of their spring schedules, providing teams the opportunity to focus on conditioning, acclimatization and preparing for the upcoming fall season after a nearly 12-month break from the sport,” the release says.

Concerns with playing two football seasons in the same calendar year were cited as one of the reasons for canceling the season outright.

The release says discussions will continue on a potential cross country season in spring 2021, although a final decision has not been made.
